Vinton Country Club Wins Cedar Valley Ryder Cup

Vinton Country Club was the host of this year’s Cedar Valley Ryder Cup on Sunday, August 28th. The weather held out for the tournament as the Cedar River was over its banks and creeping around the perimeters of holes one and two, causing some quick ground rule changes for the tournament. Vinton Country Club was this year’s winner coming from behind with a strong team performance in the final round of alternate shot.

Union defense leads Knights to 35-0 victory over Marion

The Union Knights defense led the way creating three interceptions including a 48 yard interception yard return for a touchdown and won at home during Senior Citizen Night in La Porte City. The Knight defense was led by Jace Glenn ( 4TFL ) and Brock Hadachek (7 UT) who each had 9 tackles, followed by Jordan Schmitz and Daycen Douglass with six tackles each.

Bohnsack returns to lead VS to 33-15 win over CPU in season opener

Sitting out all of his sophomore season with an injury, Blake Bohnsack missed being on the field, making plays, trying to help the Viking win. “But I didn't know how much I missed it until tonight, when I got back out there,” said Bohnsack, a junior who completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bartz and returned a punt 65 yards for another score to lead the Vikings to a 33-15 win over Center Point-Urbana in Friday's season opener.

VS sports teams begin season; complete fall schedule listed

Horst, Smith lead VS cross country runners in first meet

Grace Horst and Cole Smith were the first V-S runners to finish in their meets as the VS Vikings and Vikettes competed in the first cross country meet of the season, at Mount Vernon. Horst finished 7th in the girls race with a time of 21:19; Smith finished 24th among boys with a time of 18:07. In team scoring, the Vikings were 5th and the Vikettes, 8th.

Three in a row: Matt Martin wins Men's Championship event at Country Club

The 2016 Vinton Country Club Men’s Championship was held Sunday, August 21, and Matt Martin won his 3rd straight championship in a tight battle with Shawn Voss. Martin was fueled by back to back birdies on 13 and 14 to help propel him to the title. Voss started his day with a birdie and ended with a birdie to finish 1 over par, forcing Martin to par the last two holes for an even par 70 and a one stroke win.

The VSHS football players put on their pads and helmets to scrimmage against Marion; the volleyball team members scrimmaged against each other. And every athlete and cheerleader involved in fall sports at the high school and middle school level --- along with their coaches -- had the chance to stand before the home crowd during the annual Vinton Shellsburg Blowout.
